Why do people ignore the bad things Trump has done?
Because people are tribal and are bound by their confirmation bias. Think about when the news reports something negative about any politician. The politician’s followers are first immediately skeptical, then if/when it is found that the allegations are correct, the people who love this politician make excuses, minimize the action, or bring up something negative that the other side has done.
This type of behavior is certainly not unique to conservatives or Trump followers. You see this type of tribalism in politics, religion, and even sports. There is an irrational hatred for the “other side” and irrational love for those on “our side” merely because they are on “our side”.

I hope he’s right, but fear he’s not. Either way, it will all depend on whether trump can get a pardon for both federal crimes — easily available from Pence — and state crimes, which is a lot harder because only the governor can grant that and NY Governor Cuomo is not a fan.
I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if seconds for all the key players were already engaging in tentative discussions. But I don’t think they’ll get serious until Mitch McConnell goes over to the Oval and tells the president that if he doesn’t resign, Dems will take the Senate.
trump could care less about that, but keeping his post as Senate Majority Leader is ALL Mitch cares about. If the price of holding the Senate is jettisoning trump for the far-more-reliably conservative Pence, Mitch would push him overboard without a second thought.
Angry Staffer’s scenario is that trump exits “for medical reasons.” That would allow him to blame the Dems for hounding him from office and from health. It would let him throw himself a truly historic Pity Party, which he loves as much or more than winning. It would, as outlined above, come with a respite from his legal problems, which would otherwise be waiting for him whenever he finally leaves office. And if the Blue Wave really does materialize in November 2020, he can blame Pence and claim that “If I’d run again it would have been the greatest victory in the history of mankind.”
