After the American Revolution, British custom gradually received little response, even at Christmas. Indeed, on December 25, 1789, the first Christmas day under the new US constitution, the US Congress was still busy meeting. It wasn't until June 26, 1870 that Christmas was accepted as a national holiday.
Until the 19th century, Americans started to celebrate Christmas. They also change the organization and style. From the noisy, chaotic, boisterous, and family-like celebrations, Christmas in America has become a family day and focuses on peace and ancestral merit. The 19th century was also a time of great turmoil and class disputes. Unemployment increased; gangs of dissatisfied classes often plunder at Christmas. In 1828, the New York City Council established the first police force to deal with these riots. These changes prompted the elite to change the custom of celebrating Christmas, which marked the importance of celebrating holidays in the 1800s.
