How long have humans been doing this? Well… Probably since “humans.” And before cats, before horses, before any other domesticated companion, dogs were there. Dogs are known as man’s best friend because they have done so much for mankind throughout history by keeping humans warm, helping them hunt, protecting them from attack, alerting them to trouble, helping them in battle, guarding their livestock, and more. But how does Selective Breeding work? Well, it’s kind of like selective evolution. First, you start with a dog (or, depending on how far back you’re going, wild dogs and/or wolves, whatever) and you train them to do a specific task.
However, each dog (even among siblings in the same breed) has a different personality, skills, and level of intelligence from another. Not all dogs are going to catch on as well as others at some tasks. Some are instinctively more alpha, independent, and aggressive while others are more omega, dependent, and submissive. Some even have different natural inclinations. This is because wild canines often live in packs and play a variety of roles within the pack (including nanny dogs that watch the pups, hunters, lookouts, etc). So, early people (and some modern people today) would start selective breeding by choosing the best dog that fit their needs out of each litter to breed.
For example, if you trained all the puppies, but noticed that one learned faster or was more patient (or whatever skill you were wanting), you would choose to breed that dog with another dog in the village with similar attributes (to increase the likelihood their puppies would have similar traits). That way, when your best working dog died, you had a higher chance of finding a similar dog to follow in its footsteps.
And the cycle would continue with each new litter of puppies throughout generations.
That’s selective breeding. And in a world where a good dog was the difference between life and death, these dogs were considered precious and important parts of the community.
