(Free shipping) Do you really need hiking pants?

You definitely don’t need hiking pants. Especially if you are comparing them to wearing shorts. If you plan on wearing pants that are non-hiking pants, I would not recommend taking cotton materials.

I recommend wearing hiking pants if it is below freezing, it’s a low effort hike and cold or rainy, if there are dense bugs, or if there is intense sunlight.

Hiking pants can be restrictive and trap heat if they are a woven nylon fabric. However, those fabrics are great for really cold weather and bushwacking. I prefer wearing shorts, even in wet conditions. I feel more agile, it allows me to travel lighter and faster, and I can walk through water crossings without a second thought.

There are definitely benefits to hiking pants. They protect your skin from the sun, ticks, scrapes from bushes, mosquitos, etc. I don’t wear hiking pants in the sun, I prefer to use sunscreen, but hiking pants are more efficient. If it is extremely hot, especially at high altitude, then a synthetic polyester hiking pant is highly recommended.
