In my experience, when food is declared Free of something, it is rendered . . . to put it politely . . . bloody awful. I fully understand the healthy diet arguments and, by and large, ignore them. I was a war baby and, as I grew up, meat was considered good for you. Mince was mince, sausages were sausages and a steak pie contained steak. Quorn (whatever it really is) was unheard of. You did not get Quorn mince, quorn sausages and so on. If a meat dish was placed in front of you, you knew you were eating good quality British meat. Quorn, for God’s sake! Never!
Now, I respect vegetarians but I could never become one. Sitting down to a meal that resembles an aerial view of a bloody rain forest does not engage my saliva glands. My daughter, though not vegetarian, disagrees with me. She is married with two small children and advocates (and sticks rigidly to) three meat free dinners every week. If I am there for dinner it is never on a meat free evening. My wife has also caught onto the meat free dinner thing. I don’t mind pasta but insist that fish must be considered meat free on one of the meat free evenings.What I think I am trying to say is: food is one of our great pleasures in life. Why put it in a bloody straitjacket?To return, somewhat belatedly, to the original question: ‘Do you like gluten free Pizza?’ My answer? I will never know because I will never try it.’I expect hostile replies from people who are far more sensible than me and I will respect the views expressed. My own opinions, however, will remain unchanged. Grumpy old fart I am and Grumpy old fart I will remain.
