Beyond this, there is little that you can do without a veterinarian’s help. I’m afraid that there is no one treatment that will help all the possible diseases that cause skin problems in dogs. There are many, many different conditions that can cause rashes and hair loss in dogs, including infestation with parasites (some of which are not killed by flea products), bacterial or fungal infections, allergies, irritation from chemicals in the water that he swims in or on surfaces that he sleeps on, genetic abnormalities, immune system diseases, and skin cancer. Unfortunately, there is no single treatment that will help all (or even most) of these different problems. Even if you knew the exact cause of a particular dog’s problem, none of these conditions can be cured with a single treatment. Most skin conditions in dogs require multiple treatments given repeatedly over a period of weeks or months, and some cannot be cured at all. This is not easy with dogs that you may or may not see every day. The dog won’t understand that you are trying to help him because your treatments won’t usually result in immediate relief. Dogs aren’t stupid and they are likely to stop coming around if their visits always result in unpleasant consequences such as being forced to take medicine, being sprayed with insecticide, or getting a bath. Street dogs aren’t as trusting or tolerant as pets that know you wouldn’t hurt them.
