I’m from southwest Florida, the area between Sarasota and Ft. Myers, and inland as far as Arcadia. Here are the top three places I would check out the birding (although I myself don’t bird, I did shoot lots of bird pictures at these locations!):Telegraph Swamp, the cypress swamp in Babcock Ranch, the part they still run cattle on, not the new, supposedly enviro-friendly community. Visit in the summer, when the area is flooded and looks like the set for Jurassic Park! And bring some galoshes. Oh yes, while you’re watching the birds, do watch out for the alligators! The Venice Rookery is very small, basically a little island of wilderness in a sea of suburbia, but you can see great blue herons and anhingas there. Be prepared to be elbow to elbow with photographers shooting with $10,000 worth of glass on their tripods!
Finally, there is J. N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge, which receives tons of colorful migrating birds in the winter months and is pretty much vacant, except for the year-round residents, the rest of the year. (I wouldn’t kid you, that’s the real name! He was a local cartoonist long ago, who fought the reckless development of Florida’s precious wetlands.) This is a place you can actually drive through and shoot out the window of your car, if you have a long lens. Happy birding, ornithophiles!
