Given my taste for heavy metal and hair bands, and Dad’s acid rock, my poor kids didn’t know how the hell to rebel against their parents’ music. We all agreed that rap wasn’t our collective gig. But what were the kids to do? Well. Son started playing guitar (very very well, too – a natural) and coming from his room was either folk.

My mom and I just went to a show on Andrew McMahon’s acoustic tour last month. Justin Timberlake Can’t stop the feeling Shirt. The tickets were her Mother’s Day gift. My older sister got me into his original band, Something Corporate, when I was around eight. I got my mom into his second band, Jack’s Mannequin, when I was fifteen or so. She doesn’t listen to much of his older work since her enjoyment of his music starts around his second JM album. When a song from his latest album started getting popular, I got a call from my mom while she was driving. “[Cori]!! Andrew is on the radio!!” His music had been playing regularly on our local alt-rock station for a decade or so since he’s done a lot of shows for them and they were one of the first stations outside of his home state to play his music, but this was a Popular Music station playing him.

That was my fourth show of his (SoCo tenth anniversary. Justin Timberlake Can’t stop the feeling Shirt.
