Whether a Newfoundland will be a good candidate for service work for you really depends on what you need. I always recommend you stay away from giant breeds unless you need a significant amount of mobility help. Giant breeds are so large that transporting one and teaching one to tuck under things and stay out of the way can become rather tricky and that is not something you want in a service dog. So if the tasks you need can be done by a smaller dog, I do recommend you go for a smaller dog. It’s not that Newfoundlands are a bad choice for an SD prospect, it’s just that if you can avoid it a giant dog isn’t going to be ideal. When it comes to the giant breeds, Newfoundlands and Bernese Mountain dogs tend to be the best of the best for service work. They are a great size and built specifically for draft work, which comes in handy if you’re specifically seeking out a mobility dog, and they have calm, docile temperaments. They aren’t as lacking in drive as many other giant breeds are so tend to be fairly easy to train.
