In 1906, Hugh Roberts is credited with using the phrase “Crimson Tide” in an article about the 1907 Auburn versus Alabama game.  Auburn was heavily favored to win the game which was played on a muddy field that stained the Alabama white jerseys crimson.  Alabama held Auburn to a 6-6 thus then nickname “Crimson Tide”. The 1930 team was dubbed the “Red Elephants” by sportswriter Everett Strupper of the Atlanta journal.  The color referred to the crimson jerseys and the “elephants” the size and physical prowess of the first team, or varsity.  That team went 10-0, shutting out 8 opponents and only allowing 13 points all season. Those “Red Elephants” defeated Washington State in the Rose Bowl 24-0 and were national champions.

A Birmingham luggage company named Bambarger Trunk Co. used a red elephant for its symbol and passed out little red elephants to Alabama fans departing for Pasadena from Birmingham. A sportswriter wrote that Alabama’s Thin Red Line washed over their opponents like a Crimson Tide. The simile stuck and became an official team name.

The “Crimson Tide” moniker came from a description of the football team sweeping across the field “like a crimson tide” during the Alabama/Auburn game of 1907. Later, in the 1930’s, the linemen of the team were described. As a line of red elephants due to their crushing dominance over the teams they played. At which point UA became associated with the elephant. Both nicknames emerged from descriptions of the football team, but other than that they are unrelated.

When Alabama first started playing football in the late 1800’s. Alabama On The Road Tua national Championship shirt. The team was called the Big Red or the Reds or something like that. I didn’t google it, but if it’s not exactly right, it’s close .I went there, but it’s been 30+ yrs ago.
