WKRP in Cincinnati began as the funnier program with characters such as Johnny Fever and Venus Flytrap. First annual WKRP thanksgiving day Turkey drop shirt. But after a season or so, the characters went nowhere and became stale. While not filmed in Cincinnati, it did capture the feel of the city with some of the show’s plots and settings. The weatherman and salesman certainly reflected some characters you would find in the city. Taxi, in the long run, was a better and funnier show. The characters developed from season to season, and the viewer could develop a relationship with them. While the characters and the plots were far removed from reality, there was an essence of truth that made it all seem plausible and familiar and funny.
Did you prefer “WKRP in Cincinnati”?
I can watch reruns of Taxi and they still seem fresh and amusing. Looking at WKRP now brings a laugh and a memory, but it’s dated and the humor just isn’t there anymore. I prefer Taxi, but I’m probably biased because I watched a lot more of it. WKRP has some funny moments. But Taxi is a better show overall, although it got kinda lame towards the end. But the cast on Taxi is superior; Danny Devito, Andy Kaufman, Chris Lloyd are legends. Tony Danza pretty funny and Judd Hirsch is very relatable and was good at playing the “normal” guy and kept the whole thing together. I would have to give Taxi the nod as a better program for certain.

Though the variety of characters on each show was very good Taxi had some of the greatest characters I can remember. First annual WKRP thanksgiving day Turkey drop shirt. Reverend Jim was absolutely brilliant as was the quirky Latka Gravas and his equally quirky fiancĂ©, Simka. I have always found every character that Judd Hirsch plays to be endearing, so he is one of my favorite Hollywood people. Danny DeVito rose to stardom on this show too. I will add that I am from Cincinnati so it was interesting to have a show that was ‘based’ on that market. Cut they did not film it here or work it into the show much, so it was a little disappointing from that perspective. I definitely preferred WKRP.
I wonder whether I would answer differently now that I’m older, as I had the feeling Taxi was unappealing to a younger audience. Oh well. One thing I love with WKRP is the song played during the closing credits. It’s so very rock and roll, unintelligible, and I had to wait for years of internet development to find out anything about it. You can hear it here with someone’s best guess at the lyrics. The closing theme, “WKRP In Cincinnati End Credits,” was a hard rocknumber composed and performed by Jim Ellis, an Atlanta musician who recorded some of the incidental music for the show.

According to people who attended the recording sessions. First annual WKRP thanksgiving day Turkey drop shirt. Ellis didn’t yet have lyrics for the closing theme, so he improvised a semi-comprehensible story about a bartender to give an idea of how the finished theme would sound. Wilson decided to use the words anyway, since he felt that it would be funny to use lyrics that were deliberate gibberish, as a satire on the incomprehensibility of many rock songs.
